7 Tips to Improve Your Driver and Hit Longer, Straighter Tee Shots

By JustSwingClub — Play Better Golf. No Coaches. Just Community.

If you're struggling with your driver—slices, hooks, low bullets, or inconsistent strikes—you’re not alone. The driver is the hardest club in the bag to master. But with the right fundamentals (and a little feedback from the JustSwingClub community), you can start hitting longer, straighter tee shots consistently.

Here are 7 proven tips to instantly improve your driver and build a more reliable golf swing.

---

1. Set Up for Success With Proper Ball Position

Most amateur problems start before the swing even begins.

Move the ball forward in your stance—just inside your lead heel.

This helps you hit the ball on the upswing, adding launch angle and reducing spin.

Quick checklist:

  • Wide stance
  • Slight spine tilt away from the target
  • Hands just behind the ball

This creates the ideal launch conditions for big drives.

---

2. Tee It High Enough

A low tee equals low, spinny drives.

Use the rule:

Half the ball should sit above the top edge of your driver face.

This helps:

  • Hit up on the ball
  • Increase carry distance
  • Reduce unwanted backspin

If you’re sky-marking your driver, lower it slightly, but avoid teeing too low.

---

3. Relax Your Grip

Most golfers hold the driver way too tightly.

A tight grip = tension → slow swing speed → inconsistent strikes.

Try this:

Grip pressure of 3/10.

Firm enough to control the club, but soft enough to allow natural release.

Relaxed hands = faster clubhead speed.

---

4. Create a Wide, Smooth Takeaway

A clean takeaway sets the tone for the entire swing.

Focus on:

  • Keeping the clubhead outside your hands in the first foot
  • Low and slow
  • Building width without forcing power

This helps you stay on plane and rotate properly.

---

5. Turn, Don’t Lift

A common amateur flaw is lifting the arms without making a real turn.

Make a full shoulder turn, allowing your trail shoulder to move behind you.

Feel: Your back should point toward the target at the top.

This generates effortless power.

---

6. Shift, Then Rotate Through the Ball

At impact, pros get their weight forward—but they're still swinging up.

The sequence is:

Pressure shift → rotate → extend.

If you hang back, you’ll hit thin or weak shots.

If you slide too much, you’ll block or flip.

Smooth athletic motion = consistent bombs.

---

7. Finish Balanced Every Time

A great finish means a great swing.

You should be able to hold your finish for 2–3 seconds with:

  • Chest facing the target
  • Belt buckle forward
  • Weight on your lead foot
  • Club wrapped around your back

A stable finish often fixes swing issues automatically.

---

If you slice:

  • Strengthen grip slightly
  • Move right shoulder behind ball
  • Feel an inside-out path

If you hook:

  • Neutralize grip
  • Calm your hands in the takeaway
  • Extend longer toward the target

If you top shots:

  • Keep chest behind the ball
  • Tee it higher
  • Feel like you’re sweeping, not chopping
